President of Iraq Barham Salih discusses the revival of culture in Mosul with UNESCO

The Unesco Representative to Iraq, Paolo Fontani, met at the Presidential Palace in Baghdad with Ms Maysoon Al Damluji, cultural advisor to the President, to discuss cooperation in the area of culture. The meeting included a representative from Kashkul at the American University of Iraq in Sulaimani, Dr Marie LaBrosse, Co-Founder and Director, and Mr David Shook, from Phoneme Media.

The discussions focused on the possible cooperation in the revival of cultural activities in the city of Mosul, including exhibitions, musical performances, and literary events, keeping in mind the century-old tradition of openness of the city that has always been acting as a cultural hub. The talks included also the candidature of the city of Sulaimaniyah as a creative city for literature.

Later, the Unesco Representative had a brief meeting with President Barham Salih who expressed his strong support to Unesco’s activities in the country, including the initiative to revive the spirit of Mosul. He recalled his invitation to Unesco Director-General Azoulay to visit Iraq on an official mission possibly in autumn 2019. President Salih also underlined the importance of Babylon, whose nomination is currently under evaluation by the Advisory Body (ICOMOS) and will be examined by the World Heritage Committee at its 43rd session in Baku, Azerbaijan.
